A staggeringly beautiful and unbearably poignant novel. O'Farrell is one of the most surprisingly quiet radicals in fiction

A suspenseful lyrical novel
A beautifully written novel filled with suspense, spiritual, lyrical elements and grief. Interestingly, Shakespeare is never mentionned by name. He is barely a secondary character in this novel in which Agnes, the wife, is a beautifully portrayed woman with an intense connection to nature and mystical elements. That connection, with the constant back and forth between past and present, helps build up the tension. Hamnet, their son, (whose name reminds us of the title of a certain famous play), is bound to die. The viewer knows it, he expects it and the tension leading up to that heart-wrenching moment is unbearable. A must read.
